Do pregnant dogs need deworming?

Many people think that when a dog is pregnant, using deworming medicine will affect the puppies in the womb. However, regularly deworming pregnant dogs is a measure to protect the health of puppies, helping to destroy and eliminate worms in both mother dogs and puppies.

Should puppies be dewormed?

Deworming puppies is a necessary task that anyone raising a pet is aware of. However, not many people are really sure when to deworm puppies.

Normally we should deworm puppies when they are 2 weeks old. Because at this age puppies are at the highest risk of being infected with worms due to infection from the environment or infection from the placenta while still in the mother’s womb.

Dogs with worms not only lose their appetite, become stunted and weak, but worms can also cause intestinal and bile duct obstruction. Over time, dogs with worms can also lose blood, have a weakened immune system and cannot absorb antibodies from vaccines.

So for puppies to develop well both physically and digestively, we need to deworm them when they are 2 weeks old so that they can grow up healthy and increase their resistance.

The right way to deworm dogs

Dogs don’t like to take medicine, and deworming medicine is no exception. They always keep their mouths closed and resist strongly. Some dogs even regurgitate it. In both cases, the dog accepted the medicine in very small doses.

The easiest way is to put the pills in their food. Dogs usually eat and swallow their food, so the pills will easily go in. Some clever dogs will recognize the pills in the food. For these puppies, you will have to put the pills directly in their mouth. Or you can crush them and mix them with their food. Maybe the puppy will not detect it and you will be successful.

Depending on the dog breed, the dosage will be different. You should pay close attention to this issue. Avoid overdose causing drug shock. A deworming pill for dogs is not too high and not too expensive. You should remember the regular schedule to deworm your puppy.
